How to conduct a seminar
Plan the seminar so that the lesson combines the theoretical part and practice, the exercises. The ratio of these two components will depend on the specifics of the material that you are presenting. In some cases, the lack of practice and exercises can be compensated for by active bilateral communication, the exchange of experience. Choose the appropriate form of the event: club seminar; webinar; training; presentation; Master Class.
Check the availability of everything necessary for the event. At least you need chairs, tables, bottled water, sheets, pens. If you plan to conduct a webinar, you need to install Skype, TrueConf or ooVoo on your computer. For a club seminar, which is held, as a rule, over a cup of tea, check the availability of necessary provisions. In addition, in each specific case, additional equipment may be required. For example, performing in front of a large audience is difficult without a chair and a microphone.
Introduce yourself at the beginning of the seminar. Call not only your name and surname, but also regalia, and if you represent a company, it is a position. When the event is attended by up to ten people, to create a warmer atmosphere, ask to introduce yourself and those present. If the seminar is designed for a wider audience, unfortunately, usually there is no opportunity to get to know each one.
Start by announcing the seminar plan to prepare the audience for what it is going to hear. If the detailed plan was known to the participants in advance, you can skip this point.
Since, according to observations of researchers, it is difficult to maintain focused attention of the audience for more than 20-30 minutes, alternate your monologue with tasks and exercises. This is better than dividing the seminar into two parts: theory and practice. Try to submit information in the form of a live story, read from the sheet only as a last resort. Describe the material is interesting: bring colorful analogies, resort to subtle humor, explain in visual examples. If necessary, use video clips.
Tasks for workshop participants are printed on separate pages and distributed to everyone. Think of individual or collective exercises, depending on the specifics of the subject you are teaching. Try to get everyone involved.
At the end of the seminar, hand each participant a certificate that he has completed the training, leave his contact details and plan for future seminars.
